Bible Verses About Loneliness

The first thing God calls "not good" in the Bible is a person being alone, and He says it before anything has gone wrong. Loneliness is not a failure of faith or of character. It is the ache of a thing you were built to need.

These are grouped for the two halves of it: the promise that you are not actually alone, and the honest fact that you were also made for people with faces.

God's promise to be with you

The claim is about His location, not about how present He feels.

Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

7 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?

8 If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea,

10 even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 139:7-10

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10

When you feel forgotten

Psalm 25 and Psalm 142 are written from inside it. Neither one resolves quickly, and both are in the book.

Turn to me and be gracious, for I am lonely and afflicted.

Psalm 25:16

Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.

Psalm 27:10

Look to my right and see; no one attends to me. There is no refuge for me; no one cares for my soul.

Psalm 142:4

15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the son of her womb? Even if she could forget, I will not forget you!

16 Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.

Isaiah 49:15-16

God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

Psalm 68:6

You were made for company

Scripture treats isolation as something to be brought out of, not something to endure well.

The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”

Genesis 2:18

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.

10 For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

24 And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.

25 Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25

so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another.

Romans 12:5

One thing to do with these

Psalm 68:6 says God sets the lonely in families — and in practice that has almost always meant a specific person doing a specific ordinary thing. Send one message this week to someone you have lost touch with. Not a deep one. Loneliness lies about how welcome you would be, and the only way to test that claim is to make it answerable.

A prayer you can borrow

God, I am lonely, and I am embarrassed about how much it hurts. You said it was not good for a person to be alone, so I am taking that seriously instead of trying to be fine. Be near me tonight in a way I can actually feel. And put someone in front of me this week — or give me the nerve to go first. Amen.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about being lonely?

That God is near, and that being alone is genuinely not good. Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5 both promise He will not leave you; Genesis 2:18 says plainly that isolation is a problem. Scripture holds both without treating either as the whole answer.

Is there a Bible verse for feeling alone?

Psalm 25:16 — "Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted" — is the most direct, and it is a prayer rather than a reassurance, which is often what helps. Psalm 27:10 is the one for people whose loneliness started at home.

Does God feel far away when I'm lonely?

Often, and Scripture does not treat that as a sign He has gone. Psalm 139 describes there being nowhere you could go to escape His presence, written by someone who plainly did not always feel it. Feeling and fact are allowed to disagree.

How do I stop feeling lonely as a Christian?

Partly by taking Hebrews 10:25 literally — showing up somewhere regularly, even when you do not want to. Partly by naming it to one person. And if the loneliness has lasted months and comes with low mood or hopelessness, treat it as a health question too and talk to a doctor. Those are not competing answers.
