Most people looking for verses about work are not looking for a motivational poster. They are three years into a job nobody notices, or working for somebody difficult, or quietly wondering whether any of it counts for anything.
Scripture has more to say about that than most of us were taught. Work is not a punishment God invented after Eden went wrong, and the person you are actually working for is not the one who signs the timesheet.
This is the part that surprises people. Adam is given a garden to tend before anything goes wrong. What the fall broke was not the existence of work but its ease.
Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
Genesis 2:15
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Exodus 20:9
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
Ecclesiastes 3:22
The single most quoted verse on this page, and worth reading slowly: the audience changes, and everything else follows.
23 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men,
24 because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

7 Serve with good will, as to the Lord and not to men,
8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.
Ephesians 6:7-8
For the stretch where nothing lands and nobody notices. Scripture does not promise recognition. It promises the labor is not wasted, which is a different and better claim.
There is profit in all labor, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Proverbs 14:23
Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

The Bible is unusually blunt about overwork. Psalm 127 calls the anxious early start and late finish pointless, and says God gives to His beloved in their sleep.
Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and pursuit of the wind.

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself.

1 A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain.

Psalm 127:1-2
11 and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters, and to work with your own hands, as we instructed you.
12 Then you will behave properly toward outsiders, without being dependent on anyone.

Pick the task at your job you resent most — the recurring one, the invisible one — and do that specific thing this week as if Christ were the one receiving it. Colossians 3:23 does not ask you to feel differently about the task. It asks you to change who you have in mind while you do it, and the feeling usually follows later.

God, You worked before You rested, and You called it good. Help me see this job the way You see it. Where the work is small, make me faithful in it. Where it is thankless, remind me who I am doing it for. And where I have made it an idol, loosen my grip. Amen.

No. Genesis 2:15 puts Adam in the garden to tend it before the fall. What Genesis 3 introduces is not work itself but difficulty — thorns, sweat, frustration. The instinct that your work should mean something is older than the brokenness in it.
It does not tell you to pretend. Ecclesiastes is candid about work that feels like chasing wind. What Colossians 3:23-24 adds is a change of audience: the work is done for the Lord, and He sees the parts nobody else does. That is not the same as being told to stay — Scripture nowhere forbids finding another job.
