Search for leadership and you will mostly find business books with a verse bolted on. Scripture's account is stranger and more demanding than that, and it starts by inverting the thing everybody wants.
These passages are for anyone carrying responsibility for other people — a team, a small group, a shift, a family business, a ministry. Not only for people with the title.
He does not soften it. The rulers of the nations lord it over people; among you it will not be like that. Then He washes their feet, which is what He meant.
42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
43 But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
44 and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Jethro's advice to Moses is the oldest leadership selection criteria in Scripture, and character outranks competence in every list that follows it.
Furthermore, select capable men from among the people—God-fearing, trustworthy men who are averse to dishonest gain. Appoint them over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
Exodus 18:21
1 This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3 not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money.
4 An overseer must manage his own household well and keep his children under control, with complete dignity.
5 For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.
7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil.

Proverbs 11:14
Nehemiah hears the walls are down and sits down and weeps before he does anything else. The plan comes after the grief and the prayer, not instead of them.
4 When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
5 Then I said: “O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion with those who love Him and keep His commandments,
6 let Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have sinned.
7 We have behaved corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.
8 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses when You said, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
10 They are Your servants and Your people. You redeemed them by Your great power and mighty hand.
11 O Lord, may Your ear be attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to revere Your name. Give Your servant success this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” (At that time I was the cupbearer to the king.)

The sobering half. Teaching and leading carry a stricter judgment, and Scripture says so plainly rather than in the small print.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
James 3:1
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Hebrews 13:17
Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.

Take the person you lead who is hardest to lead, and this week do one concrete, unglamorous thing for them that they will not know you did. That is the whole of John 13 in practice: the towel, before the teaching, without an audience.
A prayer you can borrow
God, You know what I am carrying for other people and how often I get it wrong. Make me the kind of leader who serves rather than performs. Give me courage where I have been avoiding, and humility where I have been certain. And guard the people under my care from my blind spots. Amen.

That it is service before it is authority. In Mark 10:42-45 Jesus contrasts how the rulers of the nations lead with how His followers must — whoever wants to be great must be a servant — and then demonstrates it by washing His disciples' feet.
The phrase is modern; the idea is Mark 10 and John 13. It is not a management technique for getting better results out of people. It is a claim that authority in God's economy exists for the benefit of the people under it, and Jesus models the cost rather than the branding.
Nehemiah for rebuilding under opposition, Moses for delegating after Jethro told him he would burn out, Joseph and Daniel for serving with integrity inside governments that did not share their faith, and Deborah for leading a nation that had run out of anyone else willing.
