Scripture by topic
The Bible has more room for despair than most Christian writing does. Elijah asked to die. David wrote whole psalms that end without relief. None of that got edited out.
These passages start where you actually are rather than where you are supposed to be. Some of them are laments and stay laments — that is on purpose.
These are honest about how bad it gets. They were written by people in it, not people describing it.
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.
Psalm 42:11
My eyes grow dim with grief. I call to You daily, O LORD; I spread out my hands to You.
Psalm 88:9
13 But to You, O LORD, I cry for help; in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 Why, O LORD, do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me?

I am weary from groaning; all night I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.

7 Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, or I will be like those who descend to the Pit.
8 Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.
Psalm 143:7-8
1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?
Psalm 13:1-2
Notice how ordinary the help is in 1 Kings — an angel brings Elijah food and lets him sleep before saying anything else.
5 Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”
6 And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.
7 A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
8 So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
1 Kings 19:5-8
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Psalm 34:17-18
But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me”—
12 even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines like the day, for darkness is as light to You.

Lamentations 3:21-23
1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 40:1-3
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.
Isaiah 43:2
8 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah 61:3
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13
5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion; my heart will rejoice in Your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.
Psalm 13:5-6
Read Psalm 88 all the way to the end. It is the psalm that never resolves, and it is in the Bible on purpose. If you have been told that a faithful Christian should be past this by now, that psalm is your evidence otherwise — and then tell one real person how you are actually doing.
A prayer you can borrow
Lord, I do not have much to bring You today. I am not sure I feel anything when I pray. I am asking anyway, because Lamentations says Your mercies are new every morning and I need that to be true tomorrow. Hold onto me in the part I cannot reach. Amen.

More than people expect, and with less judgement. Elijah, David, Job, Jeremiah and Jonah all describe something close to it. Psalm 42 and Psalm 88 are written from inside it. Scripture treats deep sadness as something to bring to God, not something to hide from Him.
No. Some of the most faithful people in Scripture were profoundly depressed at the height of their obedience — Elijah asked to die days after the greatest victory of his ministry. Depression is a condition to be cared for, not a verdict on your faith.
Nothing in Scripture argues against getting medical help, and plenty in it argues for practical care — in 1 Kings 19, God's first response to Elijah's despair was food and sleep. Treat a doctor or counsellor as part of God's provision rather than a rival to it.
Psalm 42:11 is the one many people return to, because it does not pretend. It asks the honest question — why are you downcast, my soul? — and then chooses hope without claiming to feel it yet.
