Life is full of ups and downs, joys and disappointments. Sometimes, it can feel like yesterday’s failures or pain will define us forever.
But in the book of Lamentations, tucked away in the middle of deep sorrow, we find some of the most hopeful words in all of Scripture: “His mercies are new every morning.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
The Context of Lamentations
Lamentations is not the most cheerful book. It’s a collection of poetic laments, written in the aftermath of Jerusalem’s destruction.
The author, likely Jeremiah, mourns the loss, the suffering, and the consequences of sin. There’s a real heaviness in his words—one you might recognize on days when life feels overwhelming.
And yet, right in the heart of his grief, he remembers God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.
God’s Steadfast Love Never Fails
Lamentations 3:22 tells us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.” (NIV)
It’s easy to think that God’s patience will run out, especially when we’re painfully aware of our shortcomings. But God’s love is different from ours—it doesn’t fade or run dry.
No matter how many times we stumble or how dark the night before, God’s love and mercy endure. As Psalm 103:17 reminds us, “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him.”
Mercies New Every Morning
Verse 23 declares, “They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Each sunrise is a fresh start, a reminder that yesterday’s mistakes do not cancel out God’s compassion today.
Imagine waking up every morning to discover a clean slate—a new outpouring of God’s mercy, ready to meet you right where you are.
This isn’t just poetic encouragement; it’s a promise from God Himself. It means we never exhaust His grace, no matter how many times we need it.
Why Do We Need New Mercies?
Let’s be honest: we need new mercies every single day because we are constantly in need. Our hearts wander, our patience wears thin, and our strength gives out.
God knows this. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:34 not to worry about tomorrow, because He gives us enough grace for each day as it comes.
We may not know what today will bring, but we can trust that God’s compassion will meet us in every circumstance.
Living in Light of His Faithfulness
How should we respond to mercies that are new every morning?
First, by bringing our burdens, sins, and disappointments to Him. 1 John 1:9 assures us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Second, by extending that same mercy and patience to others. Knowing how generously God treats us, we are freed to let go of grudges and show grace to those around us.
Finally, let’s live with hopeful expectation. If His mercy is new tomorrow, we can face the day unafraid, trusting in His faithfulness.
Great Is Your Faithfulness
The old hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” takes its chorus straight from Lamentations 3:23. Countless believers have sung these words, sometimes with tears in their eyes, as a reminder of God’s unchanging character.
When you feel overwhelmed or weary, remember: God’s compassion is not limited by your failures or yesterday’s regrets.
His faithfulness is great, and His mercies are waiting for you—fresh and full—every single morning.
